Canton is about 29 miles south of our Tallmadge shop by I-76 and I-77. Most pole building projects in the area land in the Stark County townships around the city, such as Jackson, Plain and Perry: farm buildings, equipment storage, shops and larger garages on suburban and rural lots.

Inside the city, garages are tightly limited. Canton treats sheds over 200 square feet as garages, caps them at 15 feet tall, and allows one detached garage per home. Downtown sites are a poor fit for pole construction and add an architectural review step. Outside the city, the Stark County Building Inspection Department issues building permits for unincorporated areas, while each township handles its own zoning.

We sort out which offices apply to your parcel before we design, so the plan you approve is one that can be permitted.

Canton weather and your building

Canton gets less snow than the lakeshore counties, but winters are still long. The National Weather Service's 1991-2020 normal at the Akron-Canton Airport is 47.2 inches of snow a season, with January (13.4 inches) and February (12 inches) the heaviest months. The NWS also describes the stretch from Medina and Akron to Youngstown as a secondary snowbelt that can get buried in lake-effect years. For a pole barn, that means trusses engineered to the ground snow load your building department uses, a roof pitch that sheds snow, and doors placed so sliding snow doesn't pile up in front of them. Freeze-thaw cycles are the other concern: posts and footings go below the local frost depth, which the Canton or Stark County building department confirms at plan review.

Permits and zoning in Canton

Which office you deal with depends on which side of the city line you're on. Inside Canton, the City of Canton Zoning Department (218 Cleveland Ave SW) issues the zoning permit, and the City of Canton Building Department (424 Market Ave N) issues the building permit only after zoning is approved. The building department enforces the 2019 Residential Code of Ohio and the 2024 Ohio Building Code. North Canton is a separate city with its own building department. Jackson, Plain and Perry are unincorporated townships: each township's zoning office handles zoning, and the Stark County Building Inspection Department issues building permits. Stark County has no countywide zoning, so size limits and setbacks change from one township to the next.
